Alex Mateo Named Sunshine State Conference Pitcher of the Week
Nova Southeastern University’s Alex Mateo has been named the Sunshine State Conference Pitcher of the Week for his performance against the No. 1 University of Tampa Spartans this past Friday, March 14, marking the second time he has won the award in 2016.
Mateo tossed 8.1 innings against the Spartans, earning his third victory of the year and his second victory against Tampa in as many tries. Mateo is a career 2-0 against the Spartans, with 14.1 innings pitched, 11 hits, four runs, three earned runs, one walk, 12 strikeouts, and a 1.88 ERA. The senior right-hander is the only player since 2001 to defeat Tampa twice in his career.
Mateo will be back on the mound for the Sharks this Thursday, March 24, taking on the Saint Leo Lions at 6:00 p.m. The Miami, Fla. native would look to give the Sharks another outstanding performance, as the Sharks are poised to make a run at the regional tournament
