AEDs and CPR = SAVED LIVES
As reported in SharkBytes on Feb. 17, 2016 and in the Sun Sentinel on March 4, 2016, two colleagues who work in NSU’s Physical Plant, Anthony Iovino, B.S., assistant director, and Edgar Ruiz, M.I.B.A., manager of fire and life safety, used their lifesaving skills to rescue a coworker. The two men immediately identified that their co-worker was unresponsive, not breathing, and had no pulse. They called 911 and administered CPR before attaching the AED, which conducted an analysis and advised that a shock was needed.
The automatic external defibrillator (AED) is a portable device designed to analyze the heart rhythm in an unconscious person and deliver and electrical shock if needed. AEDs have been installed in more than 125 locations throughout all campuses at NSU (see list below) and can increase the chance for lifesaving defibrillation.
NSU employees can receive training in lifesaving techniques, such as, how to use AEDs and administer CPR, by NSU’s Department of EMS Education and Training, which is part of NSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM). Instructors of the American Heart Association Heart Saver Course offered at NSU are adjuncts of COM who are paramedics, ER nurses, and physicians. The course takes four hours and costs $50 per person and it is recommended to have at least six employees in the class.
