Author of “Baseball’s Last Great Scout” comes to Alvin Sherman Library, Oct. 8

Daniel L. Austin, Ph.D.

Daniel L. Austin, Ph.D.

Daniel Austin, Ph.D., NSU Professor Emeritus and Author of “Baseball’s Last Great Scout” will be speaking about the life of Hugh Alexander on Tuesday, Oct. 8 from 5-7 p.m. in the NSU Alvin Sherman Library.

This event is presented by the Circle of Friends for the Library and the H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship.  Come hear this “All-Star” author pitch the story of Hugh Alexander, a 20 year old kid from the oil fields of Oklahoma, who became the youngest scout ever in Major League history. Learn how Alexander, over the next six decades, signed more players who made it to the Majors than any other scout.

In early September, Austin learned of his nomination for the SABR Seymour Medal Award. Named for Harold Seymour, a legendary baseball historian, this medal is awarded to the author and publisher recognized by the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) for the best historical or biographical baseball book of the year. Austin remarked; “I feel humbled and honored to even be nominated for this award.”

Baseball memorabilia from Austin’s private collection will be on exhibit. Following the presentation, a book sale and signing will take place. Books can be purchased at the event, or at the NSU Bookstore at University Park Plaza, at 3562 S. University Drive, in Davie. Call for store hours: (800) 509-2665
