With the 2012 Olympic Games in full swing, Nova Southeastern University (NSU) has three of its best representing the school and the United States in London, England this summer.
Swimmer Esau Simpson is competing for his home country of Grenada. The team hailing from the southeastern Caribbean island chain is being coached by NSU’s head swimming and diving team coach, Hollie Bonewit-Cron.
A St. David’s, Grenada native, Simpson has been training six days a week at NSU with the Sharks Aquatic club team under Bonewit-Cron’s guidance. Simpson’s Monday through Saturday Olympic preparation regimen has consisted of aerobic-based training, combined with speed and added power work. He is slated to compete in the 100-meter freestyle event with the opening heats scheduled for July 31st. Full details are available on the London 2012 website: http://www.london2012.com/swimming/event/men-100m-freestyle/phase=swm011900/index.html or at www.nsusharks.com.
Hollie Bonewit-Cron is NSU’s head coach for the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams. Nova Southeastern University athletic director Michael Mominey named Bonewit-Cron as the first-ever head coach of NSU’s new men’s and women’s swimming and diving program. She lead both teams to 2012 Sunshine State Championship (SSC) titles.
“I am very happy that Grenada has selected Esau to represent his country at the Olympics,” commented Bonewit-Cron. “He is well-deserving of this honor and has worked very hard the last two years to be at this competitive level. This will be a great experience for him not only to swim his own event, but to watch the best in the world as well. Esau has earned this distinction and I am very excited for him.”
In addition, Howard Layne, a physical therapy alumni from NSU’s College of Health Care Sciences, has been selected to be a volunteer physical therapist for the London Olympics. He will be exclusively working in the men’s basketball venue helping team USA.
