As Commencement season is upon us and we celebrate the accomplishments of our many graduates who are preparing to begin or continue their careers or proceed to higher educational aspirations, please enjoy a recap of our Undergraduate and Shepard Broad Law Center Commencement exercises held this weekend at the BB&T Center and a preview of future ceremonies.

Undergraduate Commencement – NSU alumnus Alberto J. Panero, D.O., whose life was saved in the “Miracle on the Hudson” (2009 U.S. Airway Flight 1549 emergency landing on the Hudson River) surprised Capt. Chesley B. (Sully) Sullenberger III for a heartfelt reunion before Sullenberger delivered an inspiring keynote address to more than 900 graduates and their guests. President Hanbury presented Sullenberger with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree for his service. Click here to view a YouTube video and be sure to share it on social media. Emma Magner, a marine biology major with a minor in Spanish, from Belleville, Illinois was NSU’s student speaker and is one of 19 of this year’s outstanding student award recipients. SGA President Daniel Brookins received the prestigious “James Farquhar Award” from Brad Williams, Ed.D., vice president for student affairs and dean of the College of Undergraduate Studies.

Shepard Broad Law Center Commencement – Fort Lauderdale native and General Counsel for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Will A. Gunn, J.D., addressed approximately 260 candidates. President Hanbury presented Gunn with an honorary Doctor of Laws. Piggy-backing off of Professor Bruce Rogow’s, J.D., speech in which he asked the candidates to serve the profession and their clients with honor and integrity, Col. Gunn asked the candidates not to lose focus and to dream “B.I.G. D.R.E.A.M.S.” (Believe, Integrity, God focused, Determined, Ready, Excellence, Act, Me, Serve). Student speakers included Shire Patel, who received his Juris Doctor degree (J.D.), and Ruby Kantharajah, who received her Master of Science in Education Law.

As we are in the midst of Commencement season, we still have much to celebrate, including the Health Professions Division ceremonies on Sunday, May 18 featuring a keynote address by Florida’s State Surgeon General John H. Armstrong, M.D., FACS, who will also receive an honorary doctor of humane letters degree granted by the NSU Board of Trustees.
