2011 Undergraduate Commencement: Celebrating the Success of NSU’s Graduating Class

More than 690 Nova Southeastern University students crossed the stage at the 2011 Undergraduate Commencement ceremony on May 14 at the BankAtlantic Center. More than 5,000 friends and family members, as well as more than 120 NSU faculty members, joined in celebrating the achievements of the graduating students from NSU’s Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, Abraham S. Fischler School of Education, and H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship.

This year’s Commencement speaker was Elizabeth Lindsey, Ph.D., the first female Fellow and Polynesian Explorer in the history of the National Geographic Society. At the ceremony, the award-winning filmmaker and anthropologist told the students they “are embarking on the greatest expedition there is: the journey of the rest of your life.” Adding, “With every expedition—especially one as important as this—it requires the best map possible and experts who have already blazed the trail.”

Prior to Lindsey’s keynote talk, Josie Augustin, a double major in psychology and sociology in the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, also addressed the audience as the 2011 Student Commencement Speaker. Augustin, one of 10 undergraduates named NSU’s 2011 Outstanding Students, was selected in April to speak at the ceremony.

Augustin spoke of her journey from kindergarten to Commencement. Her speech provided personal perspective on the college’s four annual academic themes: “Truth and Power,” “Life and Death,” “Good and Evil,” and this past year’s theme of “Identity.”

“Amidst life’s challenges and blessings, you will know the truth, you will be empowered, you will know how to live, you will learn how to die, you will recognize good and evil, and what is more, you will know who you are,” she told the Class of 2011.

The night before Commencement, NSU hosted the 15th annual Baccalaureate Reception, a social event that recognizes and celebrates the achievements of the university’s graduating students. More than 1,300 people, including about 225 graduating seniors, attended the event held in the Don Taft University Center.
