More than 200 Students from Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Volunteer at A Day for Children
Joining together to provide a fun-filled day of free activities promoting good health, more than 200 undergraduate students from the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences volunteered at NSU’s eighth annual A Day for Children Health Fair on Sept. 18, 2011.
The afternoon event catered to children ages birth to 15 years and included assessments for vision, medical, speech, behavior, and dental, as well as physical and occupational therapy. Attendees also enjoyed free food and a variety of activities, such as face painting, arts and crafts, and a bounce house.
Working under the guidance of 22 undergraduate team managers and faculty adviser Mark Jaffe, D.P.M., associate professor in the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, the student volunteers assisted in various tasks throughout the day. For example, some students promoted reading by recruiting guests to sign up for library cards, while others focused on nutrition through interactive presentations and distributing healthy foods.
“It was nice to provide information to both young children and the parents who care for them, to better enhance their nutrition and their lives,” said Adrianne Romagnuolo, a biology major who volunteered at the nutrition table during the event. “This experience has showed me how important it is that parents receive the most up-to-date information in regards to how to enhance the health of their children.”
The student volunteers also received praise from many of the event coordinators and vendors participating in A Day for Children.
“I was so very grateful to have [the students’] help!” said Anne Leon, executive director of public library services for NSU’s Alvin Sherman Library, after the event. “They were charming, enthusiastic, and bright. …The volunteers who worked with us really went above and beyond!”
