Nova Southeastern University Honors Hispanic Heritage Month with Cultural Events for the South Florida Community

color logo w dancerFORT LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern University (NSU) is recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 – Oct. 15) by celebrating and learning about Hispanic culture through a variety of activities.

NSU enjoys its cultural diversity and is proud to be a leader in providing higher education to minorities and is a Hispanic serving institution. Recently, President Barack Obama issued a Presidential Proclamation recognizing these institutions and acknowledging that the promise of a college education provides a reality for many Hispanic students across our country, enabling them to secure a better future for themselves and their families. Diversity in Art!

This exhibit is a celebration of art that features the Argentinean and Puerto Rican works of seven artists: Elizabeth Erazo Baez; Alejandro Borgese; Guillermo Caminos; Rita Coll; Marina Font; Héctor Maldonado; and Samuel Navedo.

Cuban Genealogy: The Hurtado de Mendoza Collection at FIU, 2-3:30 p.m.

A new resource is now available on Cuban genealogy! Learn more about the Enrique Hurtado de Mendoza Collection, a unique research collection at the Green Library at Florida International University (FIU.)

The Alvin Sherman Library will host Althea Silvera and Annia Gonzalez from the FIU GreenLibrary and Mariela Fernandez and Martha Ibanez from the Cuban Genealogy Club, who willspeak on the how the collection was acquired, what is available and how to access it. Cine Argentino: Broche de Oro, 2 p.m.

The Alvin Sherman Library continues the Argentine Film Festival with “Broche de Oro.” This comedy is about mix-ups, retirement and life in Puerto Rico, with the participation of acclaimed actors and film director Jacobo Morales. English subtitles. Director: Raúl Marchand Sanchez. Argentine actress and journalist Adriana Bianco will introduce and provide commentary in Spanish. Celebration of Latin American Music Dance Class, Noon – 1 p.m.

College of Psychology doctoral student Stefany Marcu, will be teaching popular Latin dances to NSU students, faculty and staff. These dances will consist of Salsa, Merengue, and Bachata. The Alvin Sherman Library concludes the Argentine Film Festival with “Tango Bar.”  This film is a tribute to Raúl Julia. Director: Marcos Zurinaga. No English subtitles. Presentation by Grupo Afroqueña Dance Corp – Baile Bomba. Argentine actress and journalist Adriana Bianco will introduce and provide commentary in Spanish. Panel Discussion: What Does it Mean to be Bilingual and Bicultural? 10:30 – 11:45 a.m.

The Fischler College of Education will host a symposium on the merits of being bilingual and bicultural in South Florida.   South Florida and national figures will discuss the pros and cons of bilingual education and the need to teach foreign languages in the early grades.  Local educators, members of local school districts, NSU faculty members, prominent community leaders and other distinguished invitees will participate in the discussion. Celebrating the Contributions of Hispanic Lawyers, 6-8 p.m.

The Shepard Broad College of Law, along with the Hispanic Law Student Association and the Cuban American Bar Association, invite you to join our faculty and distinguished alumni for this special event.  Hispanic judges, attorneys, and local leaders from Broward and Miami-Dade counties will discuss their motivation for becoming legal professionals and deliberate on the challenges and rewards of serving the legal field as a Hispanic professional. The keynote speaker is Israel Reyes, former Circuit Court Judge for the Eleventh Judicial Circuit of Florida. Location: Shepard Broad College of Law, Panza Maurer Law Library, 3rd floor. Musical Performance: Gumby Navedo y su Tumbao Orchestra, 2-3:30 p.m.

The Alvin Sherman Librarywill host the Gumby Navedo y su Tumbao Orchestra will perform classic salsa from the 1970s and 80s by artists Ray Barreto, Roberto Rohena, Tommy Olivencia and others. Discussion: “Latino Health: Empowering the Community,” 12:15 p.m.

The College of Osteopathic Medicine, with the Hispanic Osteopathic Medical Student Association and Public Health Student Association, will host this discussion.  Keynote speaker Angel Braña-Lopez, M.D., will present a panoramic view of the health status of Latinos within the broader context of the United States. He will also present “First Aid Kit at Colonias in South Texas” to explore the natural social network of a community – Mexican Americans and Mexican immigrants in the Rio Grande Valley – to address health care needs of a community. Edible Prose Book Club: Ripper Part II, 2-3 p.m. (this is part II)

Let’s get together and chat about books! Join us for discussion, snacks, exchange perspectives of new and beloved stories, exciting characters, and wistful imagery. This month’s selection is Ripper by Isabel Allende. While discussing the second half of the book, attendees will create a yarn painting, a popular art form of the Huichol Indians of Mexico.

Presentation: Bilingualism Modifies the Brain’s Electrical Activity & Enhances Frontal Lobe Function, Noon – 1 p.m.

This presentation will be given by Mercedes Fernandez, Ph.D., who will discuss the latest research linking bilingualism to structural changes in the brain. She will present work from her laboratory revealing differences in the brain’s electrical activity between these language groups.  Research from her laboratory supports the theory that speaking more than one language enhances frontal lobe function and reveals differences in the brain’s electrical activity between Spanish/English bilinguals and English monolinguals.  Location: Carl DeSantis Building, room 1047. Musician/Educator Paco Moreno and surprise guests perform authentic music and dances from Spanish-speaking countries throughout the world. Children will have an opportunity to touch and play handmade Andean musical instruments in this interactive celebration. Recommended for children of all ages.
