Miami-Dade Students Highlight Their Hispanic Heritage & Cultural Role Models in Annual Cervantes Essay Contest

FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. – During Hispanic Heritage Month, hundreds of Miami-Dade County students have celebrated and learned about the Latin culture. Now, they can further express their pride by taking part in the annual Cervantes Outstanding Essay Contest, offered by Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) Fischler School of Education and Human Services.

The contest, which is part of the 13th Annual Cervantes Awards for Outstanding Hispanic Education, is a fun way for students to share how proud they are of their heritage, what they have learned from Hispanic role models and how this has impacted their education.

Essay contest entries are being accepted now through Friday, Oct. 1, 2010. Essays can be written in English or Spanish, and each Miami-Dade County school will select one entry for each category to go on to compete county-wide.

During the Oct. 27 Cervantes awards ceremony, the winning students will then be recognized for their achievements under the following essay topics:

  • “What I value about Hispanic culture” for 5th grade students (100 word minimum)
  • “Hispanic role models who have influenced my life” for 8th grade students (250 word minimum)
  • “How my education has led me to contribute to the Hispanic community of Miami” for 11th and 12th grade students (500 word minimum)

Winners from each grade level will be presented with gift certificates from NSU’s Fischler School for $75 for first place, $50 for second place, and $25 for third place at the Oct. 27 Cervantes Awards, which begins at 6 p.m. at the Hilton Miami Airport Hotel.

The awards will also recognize distinguished educators from across Miami-Dade County, and Nova Southeastern University Chancellor Ray Ferrero, Jr., J.D., will be the evening’s keynote speaker and honoree.

For more information about the contest or awards, please contact Armando Rodriguez at 305-905-6517 or 954-262-3459.
