Florida Senate President Jeff Atwater to speak at NSU Commencement
FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE Fla. —- Florida Senate President Jeff Atwater (R-North Palm Beach) will be the keynote speaker at Nova Southeastern University’s Health Profession Division’s commencement on Sunday, Aug. 30.
The 2 p.m. ceremony will be held at Don Taft University Center, located at NSU’s Davie campus. Graduating students come from health programs such as nursing, physician assistant, anesthesiologist assistant, vascular sonography, audiology, occupational therapy and online health sciences.
Atwater was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2000. In 2002, he was elected to the Florida Senate following a tough campaign. Atwater’s District 25 seat encompasses parts of Broward and Palm Beach County. He was elected Senate President in 2008.
During his tenure in the Florida Legislature, Atwater has been a strong, bipartisan leader on a broad range of issues. He took on the big insurance companies to lower rates and get claims paid fully and timely following the devastation and destruction that came with one hurricane after another. Atwater relentlessly attacked fraud on every front. Whether it was auto insurance fraud, property insurance fraud, securities fraud, Medicaid fraud, the warning was clear: If you are fraudulently doing business in Florida, Atwater will find you and bring you to justice.
Atwater helped spur Florida’s job growth by championing the Capital Investment Tax Credit Program. He led the Government Efficiency Committee, which worked to streamline Florida’s bureaucracies and reduce government spending. As chairman of the Finance and Tax Committee, Atwater delivered billions of dollars in tax relief to Florida’s families and eliminated the intangibles tax on the savings and investments of Florida’s senior citizens.
He has been a leader on Everglades preservation and restoration, and helped fund and sustain Florida Forever, the country’s largest environmental land acquisition program. He has also championed key restoration programs for the Loxahatchee River, Lake Okeechobee, as well as the Sunshine State’s inland rivers, waterways, and ongoing beach nourishment efforts.
Atwater has dedicated the past eight years of public service to removing artificial burdens off the shoulders of Floridians by lowering their taxes, protecting key investments in early childhood education, raising school performance standards and building a system to foster a highly educated, and highly motivated workforce. He championed legislation to help migrant workers’ families, local hospitals, and trauma centers.
Graduating students come from NSU’s College of Allied Health and Nursing. A total of 639 graduates will have their degrees conferred.
