Florida Senate President Jeff Atwater encourages NSU health profession graduates to excel
Ft. Lauderdale-Davie, FL. – Florida Senate President Jeff Atwater (R-North Palm Beach) encouraged Nova Southeastern University Health Professions Division graduates to excel during his commencement speech on Sunday, Aug. 30.
The graduates, who were from NSU’s College of Allied Health and Nursing, earned degrees in health programs such as nursing, physician assistant, anesthesiologist assistant, vascular sonography, audiology, occupational therapy and online health sciences. A total of 639 graduates had their degrees conferred.
“The pursuit of excellence in health care, the paths you have chosen to follow is a particular compelling need,” Atwater said. “There may not be, perhaps with the exception of teaching itself, another range of career options that are so intimately tied with care and compassion.”
Atwater encouraged the graduates to “celebrate the opportunity to share, to demonstrate to others that the enduring relationships are built on love and compassion, not power and prestige.”
The graduates have been “given more than an opportunity to leave this world a better place. Today, you are charged with doing so,” the senator said.
Atwater was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2000. In 2002, he was elected to the Florida Senate following a tough campaign. Atwater’s District 25 seat encompasses parts of Broward and Palm Beach County. He was elected Senate President in 2008.
During his tenure in the Florida Legislature, Atwater has been a strong, bipartisan leader on a broad range of issues. He took on the big insurance companies to lower rates and get claims paid fully and timely following the devastation and destruction that came with one hurricane after another. Atwater relentlessly attacked fraud on every front. Whether it was auto insurance fraud, property insurance fraud, securities fraud, Medicaid fraud, the warning was clear: If you are fraudulently doing business in Florida, Atwater will find you and bring you to justice.
The commencement was held at Don Taft University Center, located at NSU’s Davie campus.
