Entire Population of University School’s 9th Grade Class to Participate in Community Service Day – Nov. 1

FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla.— In an effort to prepare its class of nearly 200 freshmen for productive lives and leadership roles through academic excellence, extracurricular participation, and service to others, the University School of NSU’s entire 9th-grade class is gearing up to simultaneously complete a half-day of community service.

For its Fifth Annual Ninth Grade Community Service Day, groups of students, accompanied by their advisor and staff members, will volunteer at non-profit organizations throughout Broward County on Nov. 19 from 8 a.m. to noon. This year’s participating organizations include:

  • Kids in Distress
  • Ronald McDonald House
  • The Baudhuin School
  • Ann Storck Center
  • Broward Outreach Center
  • Irma Wesley Child Development Center
  • Jubilee Center of South Broward
  • Salvation Army
  • Wildlife Care Center
  • Children’s Diagnostic and Treatment Center
  • Susan B. Anthony Center
  • Once Upon a Time Childcare
  • Ft. Lauderdale Cooperative Feeding Program

“This is a wonderful and important experience for our students and the non-profits,” said Isaac Sofy, University School’s student activities coordinator. “The goal is to expose students to people whose background, abilities, and life circumstances differ from their own. Many students will form lasting connections, and continue serving these organizations throughout their high school years.”

Every participant will receive three community service hours towards the 10-hour requirement for ninth grade. Community service helps instill personal and civic responsibility and teaches students the value of helping others, Sofy said.
