Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with Series of FREE Events at NSU – Sept. 15 to Nov. 1

FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern University (NSU) will recognize Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 – Oct. 15) by celebrating and learning about the Latin culture through a series of events for children, adults and families throughout the fall.

One highlight of the series will be the FREE Hispanic Heritage Month Fiesta on Saturday, Oct. 10 from 1-3 p.m. It will feature a meet-and-greet with a favorite Explorer-Gal, authentic mariachi music by Mariachi Pancho Villa and the storytelling performance of Pura Belpré Award-winning author Lucia Gonzalez.

All events are FREE and open to the public, and unless otherwise noted will be held at the Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center on NSU’s main campus at 3301 College Ave. NSU’s Hispanic Heritage Month events include:

  • Autores españoles en América (Presented in Spanish only)
    Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 7:30 p.m.
    El Círculo de Lectura en Español y America Reads Spanish se complacen en presentar a los autores Almudena Solana y Manuel de Lope como parte de la serie Autores Españoles en América. El evento incluirá un diálogo con los autores, lectura colectiva y firma de libros. La moderadora será Freda Mosquera.
  • Introduction to Hispanic Genealogy
    Sunday, Sept. 20, from 1-3 p.m.
    Find your Hispanic roots and discover your family tree. Registration requested, please call 954-262-4575.
  • Homenaje a Octavio Paz / Homage to Octavio Paz (Presented in Spanish, film has English subtitles)
    Thursday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. in NSU’s Carl DeSantis Business School Building

    • Yo, la Peor de Todas que destaca la vida de la poetisa mexicana Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. Esta película es basada en el libro Las Trampas de la Fe por el escritor mexicano Octavio Paz. La periodista Adriana Bianco y la directora del Consejo de Promoción Turística de México Teresa Villarreal abrirán el programa con comentarios.
    • Yo, La Peor de Todas (I, the Worst of All) portrays the life of Mexican poetess Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. It is based on the book, Las Trampas de la Fe, by Mexican writer Octavio Paz. Reporter Adriana Bianco and Mexican Tourist Board Director Teresa Villarreal will provide commentary.
  • Mother Goose: Me Gusta Leer en inglés y español
    Thursday, Sept. 24, from 10:30-11:30 a.m.
    Children explore the world through bilingual literature while developing pre-reading skills. Featured books include Sol a sol: bilingual poems by Lori Marie Carlson and Los Tres Cerditos adaptation by Mercé Escardó i Bas. For children aged 0-36 months with caregiver.
  • Bilingual Story Time & Family Literacy University:
    Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month/Celebrando el Mes de la Herencia Hispana
    Thursday, Sept. 24, from 7-8 p.m.
    Learn how to help your child become a good reader with stories and songs in English and Spanish. Cookies will be served! Aprenda a ayudar a su hijo a ser un buen lector usando cuentos y canciones en inglés y en español. ¡Se servirán galletas! For children of all ages with caregiver.
  • Dessert and Dialogue
    Thursday, Sept. 24, from 6-8 p.m. at the NSU Don Taft University Center Flight Deck

  • Story Time Fun & Little Learners Open Lab: Fiesta Fun! In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month
    Wednesday, Oct. 7, from 10:30-11:30 a.m.
    Children explore the world through literature in English and Spanish while developing reading skills. Featured books include Yo voy a Tejas by Mary Dodson Wade and De la cabeza a los pies by Eric Carle. ¡Sitios en español para niños! During Little Learners Open Lab, explore fun and educational websites in English and Spanish in a relaxed, one-on-one environment. For children ages 3-5 with caregiver.
  • Mother Goose: Animals / Los Animales in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month
    Thursday, Oct. 8, from 10:30-11:30 a.m.
    Speak Spanish like your favorite animal: the dog says “guau, guau”, the cat says “miau, miau” and the little chickens say “pio, pio, pio”! Featured books include De la cabeza a los pies by Eric Carle and Eight Animals Bake a Cake by Susan Middleton Elya. For children aged 0-36 months with caregiver.
  • Bilingual Story Time & Family Literacy University: Latin Music/ La música Latina
    Thursday, Oct. 8, from 7-8 p.m.
    Learn how to help your child become a good reader with stories and songs in English and Spanish. Cookies will be served! Aprenda a ayudar a su hijo a ser un buen lector usando cuentos y canciones en inglés y en español. ¡Se servirán galletas! For children of all ages with caregiver.
  • Hispanic Heritage Month Fiesta

  • El Día de los Muertos: Cemeteries and Genealogy
