Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with Series of FREE Events at Nova Southeastern University – Sept. 15 to Oct. 15

NSU Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern University (NSU) will recognize and honor Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15) by celebrating and learning about the Latin culture through a variety of activities. Highlights of the month-long celebration include:

• An open dialogue about Hispanic diversity entitled “One Size Does NOT Fit All” on Sept. 15;
• A Hispanic Celebration Through the Arts featuring art, music, dance and poetry on Sept. 15;
• The Cine Argentino Film Festival, featuring compelling films, with commentary by actress Adriana Bianco, on Sept. 19, 26 and Oct. 3;
• Olé!”: A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage featuring Latin American art and literature, and also showcasing student work on Sept. 28;
• A discussion of “What it Means to be Hispanic in the USA” with author Frank Varona on Oct. 12;
• Networking events, a children’s fiesta, and several storytime events throughout the month;
• A vivid Latin American art display at the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, now through Dec. 12, which includes exhibit lectures and dance performances; and much, much more!

All events are FREE and open to the public, unless otherwise noted. All events will be held at locations throughout NSU’s main campus in Davie at 3301 College Ave, and its Fischler School of Education and Human Services campus at 1750 NE 167th Street in North Miami Beach. Special Events:

• Hispanic Celebration Through the Arts
  Wednesday, Sept. 15 from 10 to 11 a.m.
  An hour of immersion into the heart of the Hispanic Heritage Culture of the Americas through its art, music, dance, song, and poetry.  Hosted by NSU’s Fischler School of Education and Human Services, this event is free and open to the public. • Hispanic Diversity: “One Size Does NOT Fit All”
  Wednesday, Sept. 15 from 12 to 1:30 p.m.
  This event will be an open dialogue exploring the many different Spanish-speaking cultures in the U.S.  Sponsored by NSU’s Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences. • NSU Speaker’s Forum Hosted by Dr. Larry A. Calderon
  Friday, Sept. 24 from 9 to 10:30 a.m.
  Larry A. Calderon, Ed.D, NSU’s Vice President for Community and Governmental Affairs will host a panel of Hispanic professors and Hispanic doctoral students from NSU’s Center for Psychological Studies (CPS) to share their journey of developing successful careers despite the challenges they have faced as members of a minority. Hispanic students from the Student Coalition for Human Rights (SCHR) and the Ethnic Minority Association of Graduate Students (EMAGS) will also share how the presence of minority faculty members has inspired them to overcome obstacles and pursue their career goals. • “Olé!”: A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage
  Tuesday, Sept. 28 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
  NSU’s Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences will host “Olé!’: A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage.” This cultural event, which will celebrate Latin American art and literature, will feature visual and literary artists and will showcase student artwork. • What it Means to be Hispanic in the USA
  Tuesday, Oct. 12 from 12 to 1:30 p.m.
  Renowned author Frank Varona will share information on the history of Hispanics in the U.S.  He will be joined by two educational professionals who will share some of the educational implications impacting Hispanics in the USA. • Cine Argentino Film Festival
  This FREE Argentinean film series at NSU’s Alvin Sherman Library includes screenings at 2 p.m. on Sundays in September and October. Films will be shown in the Knight Auditorium of the Carl DeSantis Building on NSU’s main campus, at 3301 College Ave. Argentine actress and journalist Adriana Bianco will introduce and provide commentary about the films.   • Ay, Juancito on Sunday, Sept. 12, at 2 p.m.
    This is a biography of Eva Perón’s brother, Juan Duarte and is subtitled in English.
  • Lola Mora on Sunday, Sept. 19, at 2 p.m.
    This film is the story of the life of artist Lola Mora, her works and loves. This film does not contain English subtitles.
  • Esperando la Carroza on Sunday, Sept. 26, at 2 p.m.
    A comedy and parody about family relations, with a tribute to Argentinian directors. Subtitled in English.
  • Anita on Sunday, Oct. 3, at 2 p.m.
    This film depicts the historical attack at the Jewish institution, AMIA, in Buenos Aires and the challenges of a handicapped young girl. This film does not contain English subtitles.

    
    

• Wellness with Zumba Workout Series
  Thursdays from 5-6 p.m. (Dates include: Sept. 16, Sept. 23, Sept. 30, and Oct. 7)
