Xanax and Opioids Prove Lethal Mix As Deaths Soar: It’s a Prescription Drug, People Can Rationalize It
Xanax and opioids epidemic are a major problem in our society. According to the Chicago Tribune, Cook County, Illinois aw 333 deaths related to opioids abuse last year, nearly three times the number in 2015. Almost all came when Xanax was consumed with opioids, a combination that can depress breathing to a lethal degree.
Steven P. Kurtz, Ph.D., director of the Center for Applied Research on Substance Use and Health Disparities (ARSH), NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, told the Chicago Tribune that his research shows that clubbers often use Xanax to ease their way down from a cocaine rush and people who can’t afford coke mix it with alcohol to produce an inexpensive but prodigious high.
