Walk to Prevent Suicide at Nova Southeastern University on Nov. 22

First ever “Out of the Darkness Community Walk” in Broward County to benefit American Foundation for Suicide Prevention

FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. – A walk for the prevention of suicide will be held at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) on Sunday, Nov. 22. The Out of the Darkness Community Walk will benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention in its mission to prevent suicide and assist those affected by suicide.

The walk will begin at 9 a.m. on NSU’s main campus in Davie at 3301 College Ave. This is the first ever Out of the Darkness Community Walk to be held in Broward County since the AFSP began holding the walks in 2004.

“Suicide is an important issue that affects so many, especially young people,” said NSU President Ray Ferrero Jr., who is serving as the honorary chair for the walk. “That’s why it is important for our university to be involved with this event. We want to spread awareness on how to prevent suicides to our students, high school students, and the community.”

Suicide is the third leading cause of death among high school and college students, and more than 32,000 people in the U.S. die by suicide each year. The AFSP uses the money raised from the walks to fund research, education, survivor and awareness programs. Out of the Darkness Community Walks are taking place in more than 200 communities across the country this fall.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is the leading national not-for-profit organization exclusively dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research, education and advocacy, and to reaching out to people with mental disorders and those impacted by suicide.

“The stigma associated with mental illness can be as great a challenge as the mental illnesses that may lead to suicide,” said Lorena Cabrera, co-chair of the walk and president of NSU’s chapter of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority Inc. “If we can talk about these medical illnesses and make it easier for those suffering from them to seek treatment, we can help stop this tragic loss of life.”
