View Historic Civil Rights Photos of “March on Washington” at NSU’s 2011 African Presence Art Exhibition

“And Freedom For All” photo documentary exhibition is FREE to the public at
NSU’s library gallery all month long, with opening reception on Feb. 3

FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. – A hush fell across the National Mall when Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke the words “I have a dream” from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on Aug. 28, 1963. More than 200,000 civil rights supporters gathered for this defining moment during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.

Electricity was in the air, and LOOK magazine photographer Stanley Tretick was there to capture powerful images from King’s speech, the march, and of President John F. Kennedy and Vice President Lyndon Johnson with the march organizers.

Now, a documentary-quality collection of these inspiring photos will be on view Feb. 3 through March 31, 2011 in the Second Floor Gallery of the Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center, located on Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) main campus at 3100 Ray Ferrero Jr. Boulevard in Davie.

The exhibition, And Freedom For All, is organized by Nova Southeastern University in collaboration with ArtVision and consists of nearly 50 historic photographs from the estate of award-winning photographer Stanley Tretick.  

In addition to photos from the March on Washington, the And Freedom For All exhibit will feature some of Tretick’s best-known work as a presidential photographer, such as the iconic photo he took of John, Jr. under President Kennedy’s desk while his father worked.

  FREE and open to the public, but RSVP needed
  Celebrate the beginning of NSU’s month-long celebration of Black History with the opening reception of And Freedom For All. Featuring hors d’oeuvres, choral and dance performances, a brief explanation of the significance of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, and a ritual “Pouring of the Libation” ceremony to honor African ancestors in NSU’s Don Taft University Center, and NSU’s Alvin Sherman Library. FREE guided tours of the exhibition are being scheduled and additional And Freedom For All events are pending. 

And Freedom For All is part of the university’s Eighth Annual African Presence Art Exhibition and 2011 Black History Month celebration, which includes a month long calendar of compelling discussions, engaging performances, educational workshops and dynamic speakers. And Freedom For All is sponsored by NSU’s Office of University Relations.

The exhibition is FREE and open to the public at NSU’s Alvin Sherman Library during the following hours:

• Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
• Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
• Sundays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
