University School Headmaster Named “Distinguished Educator” – Highest Honor for Independent School Leaders in Florida

FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. – For his extraordinary leadership and development of exemplary educational opportunities for his students, University School of Nova Southeastern University (NSU) Headmaster Jerome S. Chermak, Ed.D. has been named the 2010 recipient of the Richard & Dorothy Lear Distinguished Educator Award. This honor is the highest given by the Association of Independent Schools of Florida (AISF).

Named for the founders of the Lear School of Miami, this award annually recognizes one person who has shown by record of extraordinary leadership, that he or she has achieved special distinction in the development of educational opportunities for the benefit of children in Florida.

Chermak, past president of AISF and recipient of the AISF Alan O’Such Outstanding Service Award, has been an administrator at University School of NSU for the past 25 years. In the last year alone, he unveiled the first phases of the largest expansion project in the school’s 39-year history – an investment of about $70 million in the students’ future.

Chermak leads a student body of about 1,845 at the private, pre-k through 12 college preparatory school, which is comprised of Lower, Middle and Upper divisions. The school is situated on a 28-acre “campus within a campus” on the 300-acre site of Nova Southeastern University.

More than 70 percent of the school’s 181 faculty members hold advanced degrees, and are some of the nation’s most enthusiastic and knowledgeable instructors. Through Chermak’s direction, they provide individualized attention and promote every student’s ability to learn, grow and succeed academically, socially and personally.

Chermak has helped the school develop a reputation for academic, artistic, and athletic excellence. And as a result, 100 percent of University School of NSU’s graduates are accepted to colleges and universities around the United States, and more than 90 percent are eligible for Bright Futures Scholarships.

As a recipient of the Richard & Dorothy Lear Distinguished Educator Award, Chermak is in good company. Former award recipients include Modesto A. Maidique, Ph.D., former President of Florida International University; John Silber, Ph.D., former President of Boston University; and Abraham S. Fischler, Ed.D., President Emeritus of Nova Southeastern University.
