“Texas Two Step” Comes to NSU this Saturday

New “Hands Only” CPR Training Open to Public

CardioWHAT: While it sounds like a Western line- dance, the “Texas Two Step” may actually be the fastest and most effective way to save a life. Medical students from Nova Southeastern University’s Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine will be introducing the “Texas Two Step” to South Florida this Saturday in the hopes of saving lives.

Research shows that 70% of cardiac arrests that happen outside of hospitals happen in homes and less than 46 percent of these people receive CPR before help arrives.

WHEN: Saturday, February 24, 2019 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. No reservation or appointment is required.

WHERE:  NSU’s Don Taft University Center on the Main Campus in Davie

BACKGROUND: Hands-only CPR is easy to learn and can be performed by a layperson in emergency situations to buy time for a loved one until emergency medical services arrive.

A group of Texas medical students first developed the technique in 2015 to teach hands-only CPR to as many people as possible. The method expanded across Texas in 2017 and this week, it will be introduced in six other states, including Florida.

As the name implies, Texas Two Step CPR consists of these two steps:

  • Call 911
  • Push hard and fast in the center of the chest until help arrives.
