Teens from Around the Country Create & Perform Original Theatrical Productions Exploring Life & Death – June 26 to July 31

Nova Southeastern University hosts the Lovewell Festival of New Works by Young Artists as the culmination of the institute’s summer workshop series

FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. –This summer, as a part of the Lovewell Institute for the Creative Arts based at Nova Southeastern University (NSU), an impressive array of young adults from around the country have been working passionately to write, compose, and choreograph thought-provoking original theatrical productions.

The Lovewell Institute will premier this year’s productions during its Festival of New Works by Young Artists held June 26 through July 31on NSU’s main campus, 3301 College Ave. in Davie. The schedule includes:

  • “Daybreak: A Musical Exploration of the Death Penalty”
    Fri. June 26 at 7:30 p.m., and Sat. June 27 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
    This Lovewell Teen original production will delve into the themes of life and death, and take on the controversial topic of capital punishment and the death penalty. It will take place in NSU’s Don Taft University Center’s Black Box Theatre.
  • “Cut Short: A Musical to Die For”
    Wed. July 1, Thurs. July 2, and Fri. July 3 at 7:30 p.m.
    This Lovewell Junior original production will explore the theme of ageing through an interpretation of a dystopian society that has an expiration date for its elderly members. It will take place in NSU’s Don Taft University Center’s Performing and Visual Arts Theatre.
  • Fri. July 24 at 7:30 p.m., and Sat. July 25 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
    Title and content to be determined by students who are currently in workshop. This Lovewell Teen performance will take place in NSU’s Don Taft University Center’s Black Box Theatre.
  • Wed. July 29, Thurs. July 30, and Fri. July 31 at 7:30 p.m.
    Title and content to be determined by students who are currently in workshop. This Lovewell Junior performance will take place in NSU’s Don Taft University Center’s Performing and Visual Arts Theatre.

Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for students and seniors. To purchase tickets or for more information, please call 954-270-6452.

The Lovewell program pairs preteens and teens with professional artists and graduate students to provide a forum for collaboration amongst peers and mentors during its annual summer workshop series. Lovewell Junior performers are pre-teens entering 5th through 8th grades, and Lovewell Teen performers are students entering 9th through 12th grades, or exiting their first year of undergraduate studies.

NSU’s Fischler School of Education and Human Services Interdisciplinary Arts graduate students participating as mentors for the Lovewell Institute’s summer programs include:

Jamie Day: She has more than 13 years of professional stage experience, and is the creator of the Drama Discovery Program for children with special needs, and of Acting With Integrity.

  • Danny Swerdlow: He has appeared in Showtime’s original picture, A Separate Peace, and on NBC’s Scrubs. He also teaches English at University School of NSU.
  • Tobi Sarah Nagy: She has been involved with Lovewell as a student, intern, media and design director, and currently as the teen program’s Assistant Script Editor. She also works for University School of NSU.
  • Patricia Cabal: She was an art and theatre teacher for New York’s Wingspan Arts and at Ross Global Academy Charter School. She was part of the sketch comedy group Centaurface, and helped develop a women’s prison theater project.
