Suicide Awareness Seminar to be Given by Renowned NSU Expert

Palm Beach, FL — Nova Southeastern University (NSU) is hosting a free suicide awareness seminar on Saturday, June 16 at the Palm Beach Student Educational Center.  Scott Poland, Ed.D., associate professor and co-director of  NSU’s Suicide and Violence Prevention Office, will present and discuss various aspects of suicide.  Attendees will receive a certificate of participation.

Topics to be addressed include:

  • Bullying and suicide prevention
  • Techniques on identifying at-risk individuals
  • The psychological impact suicide has on family, friends, and the community
  • Coping with the aftermath of suicide
  • Review of counseling options
  • NSU’s psychological services available to the community

Suicide can be traced to unrecognized, untreated, or poorly treated mental illness. It can happen to people of any gender, any race or ethnicity and any economic status.  Awareness and knowledge of warning signs and helping someone access the appropriate resources are crucial in the attempt to prevent suicide and violence.

Poland is a nationally recognized expert on school crisis, youth violence, suicide intervention, self injury, school safety, threat assessment, parenting and the delivery of psychological services in schools.  He has lectured and written extensively on these subjects, appeared on all major television network news programs, and has presented over 1,000 workshops in every state and numerous foreign countries. Poland is part of the faculty of NSU’s Center for Psychological Studies.

The free seminar will be held from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at NSU’s Palm Beach Student Educational Center 11501 North Military Trail Palm Beach Gardens, FL. A continental breakfast will be provided.  For additional information or to RSVP by Friday, June 8, call 561.805.2100 or email nsu-palmbeach@nova.edu
