Get Spooked this Halloween Season With Fun-Filled, Spine-Tingling Events at NSU’s Alvin Sherman Library – Oct. 19-Nov. 1

FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center will be hosting a series of spooky, creepy, fun, and spine-tingling FREE events that are open to the public this Halloween season.

Highlights include spooky story times, A Day of the Dead celebration, and a viewing of the movie Twilight on the library lawn. The below event listing is organized into the following categories: Children & Tweens, Teens, and Adults.

Children & Tweens:

  • Eeeew, Gross!
    Saturday, Oct. 24, from 2-3 p.m., ages 9-12
    Spiders, slime, guts, and more. It’s all gross and just in time for Halloween! Gross facts, games, make slime, and more!
  • Miss Meagan’s Storytime Fun: Silly Spooky Stories
    Wednesday, Oct. 28, from 10:30-11:30 a.m., ages 3-5
    Why is a haunted handkerchief so scary? Because it has boo-gers! Join us for more silly and spooky jokes, songs and stories! Stay for Little Learners Open Lab to explore silly, spooky stories online. Learn about the library and fun and educational websites in a relaxed, one-on-one environment.
  • Miss Meagan’s Tiny Tots Storytime: Boo! Baa! Silly, Spooky Animal Stories
    Thursday, Oct. 29, from 10:30-11:30 a.m., ages 0-36 months
    What does Tweety Bird say on Halloween? Twick or tweet! Join us for more silly and spooky jokes, songs and stories!
  • La Hora de Cuentos/The Day of the Dead with Miss Rebecca
    Thursday, Oct. 29, from 7-8 p.m., all ages
    ¡Celebra el Día de los Muertos y crea tu propia calavera! ¡Se servirán galletas!
    Celebrate the Day of the Dead and make your own skeleton! Cookies will be served!

Teens:

  • Exploring Graveyards and Cemeteries
    Monday, Oct. 19, from 6-8 p.m., ages 14-17
    What is the one thing that many horror books and movies have in common? That’s right, bone-chilling old graveyards! Come explore the history of cemeteries and graves, terrifying trivia, and how cemeteries can tell us about our ancestors! 2nd floor, Lab A
  • Fantasy Writing
    Tuesday, Oct. 20, from 5-6 p.m., ages 14-17
    Ever wondered how your favorite authors create magical realms of faeries, warlocks, and vampires? Come learn how to write beyond reality.
  • Funeral Rituals
    Tuesday, Oct. 20, from 6-8 p.m., ages 14-17
    Death, ghosts, and crossing over to the other side are all common themes when you read beyond reality. Come learn the truth about various funeral rituals just like the ones you read about in horror and fantasy books!
  • Haunted Fort Lauderdale
    Wednesday, Oct. 21 from 6-7 p.m., ages 14-17
    Mysterious whispers, ghostly touches, and chilling drafts only occur in horror books, right? Wrong! Come learn about the ghosts that haunt your very hometown with ghost hunter and historian John Marc Carr. Author of Haunted Fort Lauderdale, Carr will discuss his research on various Broward locations. Attend this program for a chance to win a gift certificate for two to one of his Fort Lauderdale ghost tours!
  • Twilight Movie on the Lawn
    Thursday, Oct. 22, begins at 7 p.m., all ages
    Bring Your Own Blanket! Come watch the movie on a GIANT screen on the lawn outside the library in anticipation for next month’s sequel. You’ve “Read Beyond Reality” in this series, now watch it on the big screen! (In case of rain, the movie will be held inside the library.)
  • Monster Bash
    Friday, Oct. 23 from 7-10 p.m., ages 14-17
    Come to the NSU Open House (4 to 7 pm), stay for the Monster Bash afterwards. Enjoy ghoulish goodies and a DJ. To attend, you must visit the library’s table at the University Center during the NSU Open House where you will receive instructions on how to gain entry from there!
