Rising OD Deaths Create Backlog in South Florida Morgues

NSU’s epidemiologist Jim Hall

According to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, overdose deaths from drugs such as heroin and lethal synthetics are claiming an average of 142 lives a day in the U.S. In South Florida dead bodies are arriving to the morgues with alarming frequency.

In a recent interview with the Sun Sentinel, NSU’s epidemiologist Jim Hall said, “My best guess as of today is that we’ll have between 2,300 to 2,500 opioid deaths in South Florida in 2017.That is an average of 6 to 7 per day, year-round. Statewide the total is projected at 20 a day.”
