South Florida’s waters are home to some of the most fear creatures in the planet, but globally, many shark species have seen significant declines in their numbers. In a recent interview with ABC Local 10 News, NSU’s researcher Derek Burkholder, Ph.D., NSU’s Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography, said “Sharks are struggling, there’s an estimate of over a hundred million sharks being killed every single year around the world.”

In an effort to protect those sharks, scientists from NSU’s Guy Harvey Research Institute have been tagging and tracking them in the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico since 2008, with the primary objective of studying their movement patterns.
