Project STATIC (Stop Texting and Talking In Cars) Brings Driving Simulators to NSU’s University School

Simulators will be available for the public to try on Wed. Feb. 4 from 6 to 9 p.m.

FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. – Rocky Kaller, a high school student at University School, created the STATIC (Stop Texting And Talking In Cars) initiative to make people aware of the dangers involved with texting and telephoning while driving a car.

One of the ways Kaller helped make his fellow University School drivers aware was by bringing in driving simulators on Jan. 22 and 23 so the students could see first-hand how texting impairs driving. Now the public can come to University School from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 4 to experience the simulators, too. The school is located on the Nova Southeastern University campus in the Sonken Building at 3301 College Ave. in Davie.

The simulators give each driver a 5 minute ride. During the ride, drivers will encounter rain, road debris, and other dangerous driving situations. They will be forced to encounter these situations, of course, while simultaneously trying to text message and telephone their friends.

The lesson to be learned is that it is impossible to be a defensive driver and stay safe if drivers are not paying 100% attention to the roadway.

Rocky also recently presented his project to the United Way; he is trying to make STATIC an element of the DATE course that is required of all teenage drivers before they are issued a permit; and he will possibly be presenting the STATIC concept to some of our State Legislators in April.
