NSU’s Oscar Aldabe Sets Shark Invite Record in 400 IM

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.– December 15, 2013- 

The headline after the second day of the Fourth Annual NSU Sharks Invitational was Nova Southeastern University swimmer Oscar Aldabe(Sr., Alicante, Spain) setting a new meet record in the men’s 400-yard individual medley. He swam a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 3:56.71 on Sunday night at the NSU Aquatic Complex.

Currently, the NSU women’s team has a steady hold on fourth place with 417.5 points. The Tampa women are currently first with 690.5 points, while Florida International fell back to second and Florida Southern remained in third. Tampa also leads the men’s standings with 862.5 points. Florida Southern is second and NSU’s men continue to hold on to third place with 537 points.

For NSU, the evening finals started off with a provisional qualifying time of 1:36.96 in the women’s 200-yard freestyle relay. The Sharks’ relay team of Alexandra Zatylny(Sr., Quebec, Canada), Ashley Bransford (Sr., Santa Cruz, Aruba), Laura Gutierrez (Fr., Valencia, Spain) and Emma Lawrenz (Jr., Minnetonka, Minn.) combined for a third-place finish in the time finals. On the men’s side, Esau Simpson (Sr., St. David’s, Grenada), Magnus Lundgren (Jr., Stockholm, Sweden), Shane Kleinbeck (Jr., San Antonio, Texas) and Marco Aldabe (Fr., Alicante, Spain) finished second in the time finals with a provisional qualifying time of their own at 1:22.15.

In the women’s 400-yard individual medley, FIU’s Sonia Perez Arau, set a new Sharks Invitational record with a time of 4:20.58. NSU’s Lauren Chapple finished third in the same event with a provisional qualifying time of 4:30.68. Marco Aldabe was one of two provisional qualifiers with a third-place finish with a time of 4:00.87 for the men.

Lynn’s Magdelena Baranowska finished with a Sharks Invitational record of 55.36 in the women’s 100-yard butterfly. NSU’s Gutierrez and Lawrenz followed with third and fourth-place finishes respectively with provisional qualifying times of 56.51 and 57.00.

In the men’s 200-yard freestyle, Florida Southern’s Jesus Marin set a new meet record with a provisional qualifying time of 1:38.50. NSU’s Kleinbeck and Florian Mehlan(Sr., Moers, Germany) also provisionally qualified. Kleinbeck swam a fifth-place time of 1:40.59, while Mehlan finished sixth with a time of 1:40.60.

Although there were no NCAA Division II automatic qualifiers on the second day, 49 provisional qualifying times were recorded along with seven new meet records for the Sharks Invitational. Meet records were set in the men’s 200-yard freestyle relay, both the men’s and women’s 400-yard individual medleys, the men’s and women’s 100-yard butterfly, the men’s 200-yard freestyle and men’s 400-yard medley relay.
