Make NSU’s Library Your One-Stop Entertainment Spot to Have a Great Summer Without Spending a Dime

10th Annual “Summer of Fun” kicks off June 12, and lasts through Aug. 6

FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. – Savvy Broward County insiders know the one-stop-spot for FREE summer fun for all ages is Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center.

That’s right, we said library! For the 10th year in a row, FREE offerings for youth, teens, families and adults will take place June 12 through Aug. 6 at the Alvin Sherman Library, 3100 Ray Ferrero, Jr. Blvd. in Davie.

The festivities start with the FREE Summer Reading “One World, Many Stories” Kick-off Party on Sunday, June 12 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the only library open on Sundays in Broward County. The party, hosted with South Florida Parenting, features an island-hopping adventure, including a limbo contest with prizes, hula contest, Polynesian lei crafts and a show. Participants can also sign up to win prizes for reading all summer long (get a jumpstart at www.nova.edu/library/summer).

The party is a great time to learn about the many other FREE summer activities available. Check out the Special Super Saturday family-oriented activities from 2-3 p.m. on each date, appropriate for all ages (with a caregiver):

  • June 18 – Swami Salami & Professor O Puppet Show: Duck in a Truck’s puppet show is guaranteed to quack you up.
  • June 25 – Aesop’s Tortoise and the Hare Puppet Show: Professional puppeteer Bob Nathanson entertains with this classic children’s tale.
  • July 9 – Geddy the Gecko’s Multi-Cultural Dances from Around the World: Participate in dances from eight countries with a top-ranked performer.
  • July 16 – Fantasy Stew Show: Laugh out loud at the hilarious antics of this comedy show.
  • July 23 – Louines-Louinis Haitian Dance Theater: Enjoy musical storytelling from Haiti.
  • July 30 – Jiggleman’s Out of this World, Wild & Wacky Show: Don’t miss this comedic balancing act; he has performed on The Late Show with David Letterman seven times.
  • Aug. 6 – Fantasy Factory Theatre’s Comedy Review: Round out your summer fun with this special show.

    • July 5: Morikami Japanese Craft Workshop *
    • July 12: Acting Workshop with stage actor Larry Fields *
    • July 19: Learn to dance the Brooklyn Disco, Dominican Merengue, Israeli Hora and more

  • Silly Stories with The Shermanettes, every Thursday from 10:30-11:15 a.m. for all ages with caregiver. Take a worldwide, whirlwind voyage with our very own Shermanettes, winners of the South Florida Parenting Kid’s Crown Award! Every week we will travel the world through books, art, literature and puppetry with silly stories and songs. Special Shermanettes guests include:
    • June 23: Jerry’s Jungle Adventure Puppet Show with Bob Nathanson
    • July 28: Safari Sue’s Adventure Show
    • Aug. 4: The Book Worm Show

    • June 18: Computer Camp’s Fiction Connection – discover titles similar to books you already enjoy or explore new genres using the database, Fiction Connection, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
    • June 19: Henna Body Art – Sabah Raja will take you on a journey through the world of Indian henna tattooing, traditions and application techniques, 1-3 p.m.
    • July 10: Japanese Tea Ceremony – Chieko Mihori will perform the 400-year-old tradition of chanoyu, the Japanese tea ceremony, with an explanation of the procedure, use, and symbolic identity of essential utensils, 1-2 p.m.
    • July 16: Computer Camp’s Discover E-books – Find and read e-books using the NovaCat online catalog. E-book readers are not necessary, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
    • July 24: Egyptian Belly Dance – Rosemary San Nicholas demonstrates basic modern Egyptian “cabaret” belly dancing moves and discusses the origins, 1-2 p.m.

While at the library, don’t forget to avoid rental fees by stocking up on free checkouts of the latest Blu-Rays, DVDs and video games. Teens can also earn service hours by volunteering over the summer.
