NSU’S College of Business to Participate in Women in Entrepreneurship Week
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FORT LAUDERDALE/DAVIE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship is participating in Women in Entrepreneurship Week October 13-20, an international collaboration of Colleges and Universities in 32 countries and 45 states. The goal is to provide opportunities and events designed to help give the next generation of female entrepreneurs the skills needed to be successful.
Through NSU’s Huizenga College of Business Women’s Success Series, a variety of presentations and programs will be held.
“The purpose of these programs is to help our female students be business leaders,” said Rita Shea-Van Fossen, Ph.D., assistant dean and associate professor of management in the Huizenga College of Business. “There’s strength in numbers and by celebrating with other colleges and universities across the globe we can increase knowledge and awareness.”
According to American Express’s 2018 State of Women-Owned Business Report, Florida is:
- Number one in growth of women owned businesses;
- Number three in the number women owned businesses, but;
- 43rd in revenue for women owned businesses;
- 88% of all women-owned businesses have revenues less than $100,000 in annual revenue.
“NSU’s Huizenga Business College has special programming during the Women in Entrepreneurship Week to help improve these numbers, specifically looking at how our female students who aspire to be the next generation of entrepreneurs can gain the knowledge and skills that will help their businesses grow,” said Shea-Van Fossen.
All events scheduled during the week are open to both male and female students at NSU. Some of the programs offered during the week include:
- A lunch and learn series, Gender and Overconfidence: Evidence from the Kaufmann Firm Survey presented by Dr. Florence Neymotin, Ph.D., NSU Associate Professor of Economics.
- Coaching Sessions with two members of NSU’s Entrepreneur in Residence program. Sue Ramanos, founder of CareerXchange, one of Florida’s largest employment and staffing companies and Kathy Chiu, managing partner of The FAN Fund, a Florida venture capitalist fund will coach students interested in entrepreneurship.

According to Shea-Van Fossen the top industries for women owned business are “other services” (i.e. nail and hair salons), health care and social assistance (i.e. childcare and home health care) and professional, scientific and technical services (i.e. lawyers, accountants and architects). These industries tend to not have the revenue streams of other types of businesses like construction and manufacturing, which have a very low percentage of women-ownership.
