NSU to Host Experts on Battered Woman Syndrome and Mental Health & the U.S. Judicial System

FORT LAUDERDALE/DAVIE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) College of Psychology and the Shepard Broad College of Law will host “Pioneering Women Making History in Psychology and Law” on Thursday, October 25 from 5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. in the Rose and Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on the Fort Lauderdale/Davie campus. The program will feature a book reading and panel discussion with Lenore Walker, Ed.D., and Judge Ginger Lerner-Wren, followed by a book signing.

Dr. Walker is a psychologist who has researched various forms of gender violence, especially battered women, sexual assault, sexual harassment, sex and human trafficking, false confessions of women and child abuse. As a clinical forensic psychologist, she has testified as an expert witness in trials involving domestic abuse.

Through her research, she developed the concept of the battered woman syndrome, which is cited in cases of physically and psychologically abused women who have killed their abusers in self-defense. Dr. Walker will read excerpts from the fourth edition of her book The Battered Woman Syndrome.

Judge Lerner-Wren is a county court judge in The Criminal Division of the 17^th Judicial Circuit, Broward County. In what has been recognized as a historic administrative order, she was appointed to administer and preside over the U.S.’s first mental health court in 1997.

In her book A Court of Refuge, she details how the court grew from an offshoot of her criminal division, held during lunch hour without the aid of any federal funding, to a revolutionary institution that has successfully diverted more than 20,000 individuals suffering from various mental illnesses from jail to treatment facilities or other community resources. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear firsthand how Judge Lerner-Wren coordinated and led this specialized court that addresses the complexities of mental health and the judicial system.
