FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla.— Hugh W. Brown Jr., a graduate student at Nova Southeastern University’s H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship, was one of 14 students from Florida colleges or universities selected to the fifth class of the Gubernatorial Fellows Program. The announcement of the class was made by Florida Governor Charlie Crist.

Students in the program work in the Executive Office of the Governor or in Governor’s agencies in Tallahassee, gaining firsthand experience into the operations of state government. Students were selected based on a competitive application process, which included the ability to show strong leadership, written and oral communication skills, community activism, and a desire to serve the people of Florida.

Brown, 29, began the Master of Business Administration in Finance program at NSU earlier this year and is taking classes at NSU’s Student Educational Center in Tampa. He will remain in the M.B.A. program and take distance learning courses while in Tallahassee. Due to his selection to the Gubernatorial Fellows Program, the Huizenga School has waived Brown’s tuition fees for the balance of his studies at NSU.

“Hugh has been a great addition to the M.B.A. program in Tampa and I’m sure he will thrive in the fellows program,” said Steve Harvey, assistant dean of program administration at the Huizenga School. “The entire school is thrilled for Hugh and proud that he will be representing NSU in Tallahassee.”

Brown began the fellows program on Aug. 17 and it runs through May 14, 2010. He has been assigned to the Office of Drug Control. Of the 14 fellows in the class, Brown is the only one currently attending an independent university.

“Working as a public servant for almost a year will truly be a humbling experience, while I learn the intricacies of government procedures and policies,” Brown said. “Giving back to the state by serving as a Fellow will better prepare me to have a positive impact on the business climate in Florida.”

Brown graduated from Miami Norland Senior High School in 1998 and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1998-2002. He graduated from Florida State University in 2006 with a B.A. in history and B.A. in international affairs.
