NSU Shepard Broad College of Law Holds Feb. 23 Workshop on Guardianship for Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

FT. LAUDERDALE/DAVIE FLA. – Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) Shepard Broad College of Law will offer a workshop open to the public on Thursday, Feb. 23, at 10 a.m. on the various legal options available to those considering a guardianship for adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

The workshop, “Guardianship: Is It The Right Fit?,” will be conducted by the AIDD Clinic Director and students from  NSU’s College of Law Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Law Clinic (AIDD).  “This is a valuable opportunity for those considering becoming a guardian for a disabled person to learn about the scope of responsibilities such a position entails,” said NSU program staff attorney Jayme Cassidy.

Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities are a generally underserved population that has many legal issues that impede independence and infringe on their individual rights,” Cassidy said. She said the clinic was established in 2017 to address these needs with pro bono legal representation of those persons and their families.

Legal issues addressed by the clinic, which also expands clinical education to participating NSU College of Law students, include Social Security Income, Medicaid, Guardian Advocacy, Education, Housing and Discrimination.

Cassidy said the clinic provides community outreach through workshops, events, and community training to educate and encourage these adults, their families, service providers and the general public regarding issues confronting the affected population.
