Academy of Medical Ethics and Public Health,” according to Law Professor Kathy Cerminara, J.D., LL.M., J.S.D. Professor Cerminara noted, “Biomedical research inspires more and more ethical controversies while advancing our knowledge base. Those combine with the international reach of research protocols to increase the need for cultural competency in both research and treatment, and overlaid on it all are increasingly globalized disease patterns.”

Professor Cerminara has long been a leader in biomedical ethics. Her work bridges the medical and legal profession, an interdisciplinary approach, which is the hallmark of Nova Southeastern University. Participation in the International Academy of Medical Ethics and Public Health enhances the depth of the NSU Shepard Broad College of Law programs in Health Law, which are offered for both the J.D. and M.S. degrees.

“Interdisciplinary education helps us address the fundamental issues affecting the public,” added Jon M. Garon, Dean of the College of Law. The participation in the International Academy of Medical Ethics and Public Health highlights the national reach of these efforts across all of NSU.”

The International Academy of Medical Ethics and Public Health was founded in Paris, France in September 2016 based on a commitment to an international multidisciplinary reflection in bioethics. With 94 affiliates from across the globe, the Academy is focused on the current challenges confronting both private and public interests in the context of families, universities, public institutions, and all levels of government.

The mission of the Academy is to accomplish an ongoing international review of groundbreaking issues in bioethics that can benefit from a diversity of political outlook, culture, and philosophical orientation.

NSU’s Professor Cerminara’s work with the Academy, as well as with its sister organization the International Academy of Law and Mental Health, continues to advance the Shepard Broad Law School’s international reach. As Professor Cerminara explained, “our affiliation with the International Academy of Medical Ethics and Public Health will further our commitment to interprofessionalism, cultural competency, and ethical integrity.”
