NSU “Green Sharks” Host Earth Day Event with South Florida’s Sustainable Companies

FT. LAUDERDALE/DAVIE, Fla. ––Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) “Green Sharks” student sustainability club is hosting an Earth Day event to create awareness about sustainable companies in South Florida. More than 30 organizations, not-for-profits, government agencies, businesses, and NSU organizations will be at NSU’s Alvin Sherman Library quad on April 22 from noon to 1 p.m. to educate students and the community about sustainability efforts at local businesses.

Sustainability can be applied to every aspect of life and field of study, therefore, all participants represent diverse organizations. Organizations will be offering free give-always and fun activities that highlight their eco-friendly practices. For example, Broward County (one of the organizations attending), will have county representatives setting up trivia games and an eco- pledge to sign.

NSU’s Green Sharks will be passing out food to those who interact with the companies. Face-painting and a variety of games will also be available at the event, which is free and open to the public.

An active group of university students, faculty, professors, staff and environmentalists recently created the Collaborative Team for Sustainability whose goal is to spread awareness and education on sustainability.  The team hopes to facilitate a change in the way people interact with the environment and to lead NSU and the community into an environmentally and sustainable future.

One of the founders of the Collaborative Team for Sustainability, Guénola Nonet, Ph.D., is a scholar in residence at NSU’s H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship.

Dr. Nonet is an international researcher on the strategy and education of business schools to incorporate U.N. Principles for Responsible Management Education and U.N. Sustainable Development Goals.

“Through these university-wide student, faculty and staff efforts, NSU continues to make a difference in the surrounding communities and beyond and hopes to make a positive impact on our environment and planet as a whole,” said Nonet.

Additionally, NSU’s colleges of business, law, natural sciences and oceanography, and others offer courses on sustainability-related topics.
