NSU Executive Dr. Jennifer O’Flannery Anderson Named Outstanding Fundraising Professional of the Year

Association of Fundraising Professionals Honors Dr. Anderson at Nov. 9 Luncheon

Vice President for Advancement and Community Relations, Jennifer O’Flannery Anderson, Ph.D.

FORT LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) Vice President for Advancement and Community Relations, Jennifer O’Flannery Anderson, Ph.D., was named Outstanding Fundraising Professional at the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Fort Lauderdale/Broward Chapter National Philanthropy Day Awards luncheon held at the Signature Grand on November 9.

Dr. O’Flannery Anderson joined NSU on August 1, 2013 from Florida Atlantic University (FAU) where she was Vice President for Community Engagement and Executive Director of the FAU Foundation. Previously, she was President and CEO of the United Way of Broward County.

She provides leadership for NSU’s efforts regarding community engagement and support, including all fundraising and stewardship activities, alumni relations, and special events. Under her leadership, NSU has received a national Silver Anvil award from the PRSA (Public Relations Society of America) and several national awards of excellence from CASE (Council for the Advancement and Support of Education). She is focused on raising the profile of NSU, growing support for the university, and engaging with the institution’s constituents. She is currently spearheading Realizing Potential – The Campaign for Nova Southeastern University, the largest philanthropic campaign in the history of the doctoral research institution and Broward County. She reports directly to NSU President and CEO George L. Hanbury II, Ph.D.

For the past three years, NSU has exceeded its annual fundraising goals and raised more than $70 million. During that time, her team’s efforts have resulted in 17 $1 million+ gifts to support such valuable initiatives as cancer research, programs for developmentally-challenged youth, and scholarships for deserving students.

Dr. O’Flannery Anderson is revered by colleagues throughout the university and South Florida for her dedication to strong leadership and a lifetime commitment of philanthropic service. Three of her colleagues contributed to a tribute video played at the luncheon.

“I’ve always been impressed with, not only her knowledge but her true leadership skills and her ability through her enthusiasm to get others to follow,” said NSU President and CEO George L. Hanbury II, Ph.D.

NSU Trustee and co-founder of NSU Ambassadors Board Alan B. Levan added, “Jennifer’s influence and leadership has, without question, increased the university’s profile and esteem within the community.”

Dr. O’Flannery Anderson is involved in numerous community initiatives and organizations. She is Incoming Board Chair for the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance as well as Secretary/Treasurer for the Forum Club of the Palm Beaches.  Her community involvement includes the board of PACE Center for Girls, Winterfest Boat Parade, and the Chamber of the Palm Beaches.  She is also a member of the 1000+ Club to Benefit Cancer, Inc., Royal Dames of Cancer Research, Funding Arts Broward (FAB!), the Tower Forum and the Riverwalk Trust.  She previously served as Vice Chair of the North Broward Hospital District (Gubernatorial appointment) and was on the board of the United Way of Florida.  She is a graduate of both Leadership Florida and Leadership Broward.

Dr. O’Flannery Anderson received her bachelor’s degree from Florida State University; her master’s degree from the University of South Florida; and her doctoral degree in public administration from Florida Atlantic University.

She has resided in Fort Lauderdale for 17 years and is married to Peter Anderson. Both are also members of NSU’s Fellows Society which recognizes individuals, corporations, and trusts who have made cumulative gifts of $50,000 or more to the university.

The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) represents more than 30,000 members in more than 206 chapters throughout the world, working to advance philanthropy through advocacy, research, education, and certification programs. National Philanthropy Day recognizes members of local communities who demonstrate an outstanding commitment to leadership in philanthropy and volunteerism.

Realizing Potential – The Campaign for Nova Southeastern University aims to raise $250 million with $125 million of that total to be directed towards student scholarships and resources; $75 million for faculty chairs, professorships and research start-up funds; and $50 million for 21st century education initiatives. Research is integral to all three priorities.
