NSU Dental Students Help Domestic Violence Victims Get Free Care at New Clinic (Sun-Sentinel)

Check out this excerpt from the Dec. 20 edition of the Sun-Sentinel:

… Abused women are getting their smiles back at an unusual clinic, which soon may be a national model for teaching dentists to repair the teeth of domestic-violence victims.

Over the past two months, the free clinic, carved out of offices at Women In Distress of Broward County, has served more than 100 women who have received fillings, extractions, dentures and deep cleanings. Most lack insurance and have neglected their teeth due to poverty, a negative self-image or a refusal by their partners to allow them to visit doctors.

The dentists come from Nova Southeastern University’s College of Dental Medicine, which sends its residents, who are licensed dentists, to special-needs clinics throughout Broward and Miami-Dade counties. The domestic-violence clinic, paid for by an $850,000 federal grant, also works with dental patients at The Lodge, a shelter in Miami, and the Broward Addiction Recovery Center in Hollywood. …
