Nova Southeastern University Signs American Campus Act on Climate Pledge

NSU Joins Other Colleges/Universities in Pledging “Green Activities”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NSU Green Sharks Club Logo - smFORT LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla.Caring for the environment is something that is ingrained at Nova Southeastern University (NSU). For years NSU has worked to reduce the impact its campuses have on the environment, working to increase recycling efforts and keeping a focus on sustainability for the generations to come.

To that end, recently NSU signed the American Campus Act on Climate Pledge to reaffirm this commitment and bring renewed emphasis on the need to enhance sustainable practices across its campuses.  This pledge has its roots in the United Nations Climate Negotiations that took place late last year in Paris, France.

So far, more than 300 colleges and universities across the country have signed the pledge.

“There’s a lot NSU is already doing, but this pledge allows us to look at new ways to help the environment while re-committing to existing efforts,” said Cassilly Lobaugh, a junior at NSU and president of the Green Sharks NSU Student Sustainability Club. “Climate change affects everyone, no matter where you live. That’s why we all must do what we can to protect things for generations to come.”

Take a look around NSU campuses and you’ll see that there is already a concerted effort to protect our environment. From using the latest energy-efficient LED lighting in its buildings to approaching campus landscaping from a new perspective to reduce the amount of water needed (and using reclaimed water in some cases for irrigation) to working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, NSU has been a model for other colleges, universities and businesses to follow.

Green Sharks began last year as an undergraduate club with members from a myriad of NSU schools and programs. The group has attended the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education national conference and organized various events (i.e. Earth Day recognition, Beach Clean Up in Dania Beach and led the Stand 4 Sustainability March in Fort Lauderdale.)
