Nova Southeastern University Honors Hispanic Heritage Month with Cultural Events for the South Florida Community
FORT LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern University (NSU) is recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15) by celebrating and learning about the Hispanic culture through a variety of activities.

NSU enjoys its cultural diversity and is proud to be a leader in providing higher education to minorities and Hispanics. NSU is also number one in providing doctoral degrees and first professional degrees to Hispanics.

Monday, October 6
Culturally Grounded and Contextually Relevant Interventions for Ethnic Minority Youth: Stress, Coping, and Social Support, Noon
The Center for Psychological Studies sponsors this presentation that focuses on cultural and contextual issues to consider when working with Latino children and families that go beyond traditionally used parenting interventions, with a special emphasis on: the impact of multiple, chronic and uncontrollable stressors on family life; culturally-grounded strategies used by families to cope with these stressors; and the importance of building indigenous support networks for both parents and children. The Alvin Sherman Library will host Cuban performer Lisett Morales and her 8 piece band. Lisett Morales starred in the off- Broadway show, “Celia the Musical: The Life & Music of Celia Cruz.” Free and open to the public. Location: Minaci Performing Arts Center. Paco Moreno & Friends: Hispanic Heritage Month Concert for Children
1st floor, Public Library Services, 7-8:00 pm
Musician/Educator Paco Moreno and surprise guests perform authentic music and dances from Spanish-speaking countries throughout the world. Children will have an opportunity to touch and play handmade Andean musical instruments in this interactive celebration. Recommended for children of all ages.

Raise a Reader @ Sharkey’s Storytime! Fiesta Fun!
Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with stories and songs in English and Spanish! Recommended for children ages 3 – 5 years with their caregivers.

Being a Lawyer & Changing the World: Celebrating the Contributions of Hispanic Lawyers, 6-8:00 pm
The Shepard Broad Law Center is proud to host an event celebrating the contributions of Hispanic lawyers. This event will engage prominent Hispanic legal professionals in sharing a personal experience that motivated them to become attorneys. Current NSU Law students, NSU graduate and undergraduate students, as well as prospective law students are welcome to attend. The Hispanic Law Student’s Association, Cuban American Bar Association, Admissions and Career and Professional Development offices will co-host this event. Design a Día de los Muertos Mask, All day
Calling all teens, ages 13-18! Drop in and design your fiercest calavera mask in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. Celebrate Día de los Muertos/Day of the Dead on November 1, 2014!
