Nova Southeastern University Alumna Named Teacher of the Year by Broward County Public Schools

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FORT LAUDERDALE/DAVIE, Fla. – Eleanna Hurst, an alumna from Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) Eleanna HurstAbraham S. Fischler College of Education (FCE), was named “Teacher of the Year” by Broward County Public Schools. The honor was bestowed at the district’s 2017 Caliber Awards ceremony held earlier this month at the Greater Fort Lauderdale Broward County Convention Center.

The annual Caliber Awards recognize and honor the exemplary leadership, hard work and dedication of the district’s outstanding teachers, principals, assistant principals and school-related/district employees.

Hurst is a third-grade teacher at Collins Elementary School in Dania Beach.

“I am sometimes the only person that may encourage students to become anything that they want to be; teaching offers the opportunity to be that spark to so many students,” Hurst said in a statement.

Hurst received her Master of Science in Elementary Curriculum and Instruction from FCE in 2006. Among her many accomplishments, under her leadership her third-grade students earned the highest number of percentage points in Broward County on the 2016 Florida State Assessments.

This is not the first time an NSU FCE alumnus has been recognized. Broward County’s Millennium Middle School Intern Principal and 7th grade Administrator, Henry Brown, was named Broward County “Teacher of the Year” and the State of Florida’s “Teacher of the Year” in 2002.

Other recent BCPS “Teacher of the Year” alumni from FCE include:

2015 “Teacher of the Year” – Dr. Daniel Shapiro

2016 “Teacher of the Year” – Nicole Brown

2017 “Teacher of the Year” – B. Kyle Jeter

2018 “Teacher of the Year” – Eleanna Hurst
