Not so Happy Holidays: Could a Possible Government Shutdown Negatively Impact Businesses and Consumers?
* NSU Home to Subject Matter Expert in Business and Economics *
FORT LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. – The United States Congress has until this Thursday, December 11 to pass a budget bill – if it doesn’t, the nation will be facing another possible government shutdown. That means that right in the middle of the holiday season, businesses and consumers may have to deal with a wide array of potentially negative issues that could overshadow the normally festive holiday season.
Nova Southeastern University is home to a nationally renowned expert who can provide answers and insight on the economic impact that a possible shutdown could have on the business community and the general public during the busiest retail season of the year.
Albert Williams, Ph.D., is an associate professor of finance and economics at Nova Southeastern University’s H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship.
Williams’ experiences stem from a varied career in academia, economics, and finance in the Caribbean and the U.S. His deep understanding of business and public service grew through positions as a project officer in the Development Finance Corporation in Belize and an agricultural economist for the government of Belize. Williams spent five years as the CEO of the Belize Marketing Board. He expanded his knowledge in business in the United States by becoming a commodity analyst at Restaurant Services, Inc., the purchasing arm of Burger King Corporation.
Williams has taught courses in personal finance, corporate finance, macroeconomics, microeconomics, and managerial economics. He has provided CBS and NBC in Miami with his expertise on current economic and finance issues and, on several occasions, was featured on the PBS television segment Current Issues. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics education from the University of Calgary in Canada, a master’s degree in agricultural economics and a doctorate degree in agricultural and applied economics both from the University of Georgia. His research is focused on behavioral finance, personal finance, development economics (including poverty), investments, management, and ethnicity. His diverse career (public and private sector), strong academic background, and his down-to-earth approach have resulted in his position as a sought-after lecturer on the topics of finance (including personal finance), and economics for students, public officers, and private sector groups in Belize, the Bahamas and Florida.
