Milestone expo for people with disabilities to be held at NSU on Oct. 17

FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE Fla.—People with disabilities across South Florida are invited to attend a one-of-kind exposition filled with health information, educational seminars, exhibits, sports and art on Saturday, Oct. 17.

The milestone 30th annual DisAbilities Expo will be held at NSU’s Alvin Sherman Library and Don Taft University Center. Running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the free event is open to people with disabilities, their family and friends and everyone else.

It will present the latest services, resources, products and information for individuals with developmental, sensory, emotional or physical disabilities. There will be over 60 exhibitors as well as entertainment and educational activities.

Activities for children include performances, appearances by pirates, and arts and crafts with a professional art therapist from the Able Trust. The Miami Heat Wheels, a wheelchair basketball team, will play two games against their rivals, the Orlando Magic Wheels.

Free seminars will include “Transition from School to Life,” which explores employment and school options, as well as obstacles young adults with developmental or physical disabilities might face once high school is completed.

Another seminar, “Planning for the Future: Wills, Trusts, Guardianships, and Financial Planning,” will examine disability rights, special needs financial planning, guardianships, wills and trusts.

“The variety of information providers was amazing, and I collected a lot of information that will help me with everything from remodeling my home to play groups for my son,” said Chris Casper, who attended a past Expo on behalf of her 5-year-old son who has cerebral palsy.

The DisAbilities Expo will also feature an art exhibit by local artists with disabilities. Participants will include 9Muses, Ann Storck Center, Schott Communities, UCP, Memorial Regional Hospital/Rebels Drop-In Center, and the Center for Independent Living of Broward in connection with Broward County Public Schools. The exhibit will be on display through October 21.

Attendees who visit the exhibitor tables will be eligible to win fabulous prizes, including many gift certificates, passes to local attractions, and other amazing items. The grand prize is a 2-night “stay-cation” at the Miami Best Western Ocean Front Resort, which includes limo service to and from the resort and South Beach.
