Miami-Based de la Cruz Collection Art Exhibit at Nova Southeastern University

LAUDERDALE/DAVIE, Fla. –– Renowned throughout South Florida and the international art scene, the de la Cruz Collection presents “Pink Powder”, on view now through May 15 at the Adolfo and Marisela Cotilla Gallery inside the Alvin Sherman Library at Nova Southeastern University (NSU).

The exhibit, which is free and open to the public, brings together a group of artists whose work addresses the female form with an unapologetic intensity. Imagery varying from the quiet and ponderous to the raw and rebellious subvert the traditional role of the female muse within the canons of art history, literature, and popular culture. Works ranging from painting and photography to neon and fiber-based works express an openness and agency towards action. The viewer is confronted with fantasies of revisionist history, personal or otherwise, which unabashedly expose the romantic, self-indulgent and at times morbid desires of the female subject. Artists in the exhibition: Kaye Donachie, Tracey Emin, Naomi Fisher, Birgit Megerle, Ana Mendieta, and Christoph Ruckhaberle.

“The de la Cruz Collection is pleased to collaborate with NSU in this innovative program,” said Rosa de la Cruz, founder of the de la Cruz Collection. “These exhibitions serve as the perfect platform to further engage communities beyond the scope of the collections programming and exhibitions. Through this program, we hope to encourage a conversation which raises awareness of contemporary art practices. ”

This is the second in a series of exhibitions curated and organized by the de la Cruz Collection for NSU.

Additionally, on Thursday, May 5^th at 6:30 p.m., collector Rosa de la Cruz and director of the de la Cruz Collection, Ibett Yanez, will discuss the works featured in the “Pink Powder” exhibition. About the de la Cruz Collection: Completed in December of 2009, the de la Cruz Collection is privately funded by Carlos and Rosa de la Cruz. This space serves as an extension of their home, where for over 30 years they have shared their collection with the public. The primary purpose of this space is to provide education and awareness in the visual arts. Educational programming includes lectures, artist-led workshops, docent-led tours, scholarship opportunities and student travel initiatives.
