Kamryn Blackwood Named Miss New Mexico USA
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – January 7, 2014 –
Nova Southeastern tennis senior Kamryn Blackwood (Farmington, N.M.) has been named Miss New Mexico USA and will compete in the 2014 Miss USA Pageant.
Blackwood entered her state’s pageant after being named Miss Farmington. Blackwood will now compete in the prestigious Miss USA, which is slated to be nationally broadcast on NBC on June 16. Blackwood was also selected as Miss Congeniality by her peers.
Blackwood has been a standout student-athlete at NSU and recently spent her summer in Kenya with the organization Houses for Hope. Blackwood’s mission was to build houses, churches and schools in Kenya.
This honor was years in the making, and started at home watching the pageant with her father before her junior season. “It looked fun and I thought it was something I could do,” said Blackwood. “My father urged me to think about it while I go back to school and see if it’s something I really wanted. When I came back home I decided it was something I wanted to do. When we started I immediately fell in love with it.”
Blackwood began training months ago, but still fulfilled her commitment to NSU tennis and her mission work with Houses for Hope. “I kept it low key. Tennis was my priority and I made a commitment to my school and teammates. I didn’t tell anyone because I am the only senior and I wanted them to know my commitment was to the team. But this was something I felt in my heart I needed to try.”
The process started on Thursday, Jan. 2, and Blackwood has been swarmed by media and autograph requests ever since. “This is unreal, I still can’t believe it. I’ve been an ambassador for my school and now I get to be an ambassador for my state. I love Florida, but my heart is always in New Mexico.”
