Jai Alai and Poker Site in Downtown Miami Approved by State

02-15-18 Robert Jarvis 37web

Robert Jarvis, J.D., LL.M.

Recently, the Florida Division of Pari-Mutuel Wagering approved a permit for “summer jai alai” to West Flagler Associates Ltd. Robert Jarvis, a professor of gambling law at Nova Southeastern University, said that the summer provision indicates that the facility will be able to keep poker rooms open all year, but can only operate games between May and November.

According to Jarvis, this approval comes as voters will decide in November on a proposed constitutional amendment that could significantly impact pari-mutuel gambling. The ballot provision, if approved, would give voters the exclusive right to decide whether to authorize casino gambling in the state, requiring approval of casino-style games, such as slots.
