Hall of Fame Baseball Coach Rich Hofman Joins University School of Nova Southeastern University
Legendary coach of baseball greats like Alex Rodriguez to work his magic on the South Florida high school sports scene once more
FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. – After a 40-year career spent creating legends like Alex “A-Rod” Rodriguez of the current World Series champions New York Yankees, renowned Hall of Fame baseball coach Rich Hofman has joined University School of Nova Southeastern University (NSU).
The college preparatory school that educates students from pre-K through grade 12 is proud to announce Hofman as the school’s new head varsity baseball coach. He joins University School after compiling a tremendous 965-246-16 record during his distinguished career.

Hofman is the winningest baseball coach in Florida history, obtaining 10 state, and seven national Coach of the Year awards and boasting a record 10 state championships. He guided teams to five consecutive state titles from 1996 to 2000, captured two national championships, and had two other teams finish second in the national rankings. Baseball America named him Coach of the Decade for the 1990s.
Before joining University School, Hofman coached several South Florida teams, most recently as head baseball coach at Piper High School in Sunrise.
“We are fortunate to get someone with his expertise,” University School Athletic Director Roger Harriott said. “Not only has he had more than 200 former high school athletes go on to play college baseball, but more than 40 professional baseball players have been drafted as a result of his knowledge of the game.”
Some of the players Hofman has worked with include the aforementioned A-Rod, and Doug Mientkiewicz who has had a lengthy career in the major leagues.
The school’s baseball program has grown steadily over the past several years. This past year, two seniors signed with the University of Florida on National Signing Day. Additionally, the school’s athletes excel academically; 100 percent of its graduates are accepted to colleges and universities around the United States, and more than 90 percent are eligible for Bright Futures Scholarships.
Hofman is a welcome addition to University School, who Harriott said is sure will help lead the team and school to even greater success.
Hofman grew up in Racine, Wisconsin, where he played Little League, Pony League and High School Baseball. He graduated from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he lettered his sophomore, junior and senior years. He was also the co-captain his junior year and captain his senior year. He is married to Jo Hofman, and they have five children and seven grandchildren.
