Hack Attacks Highlight Vulnerability of Florida Schools to Cyber Crooks

A couple of months before the U.S. presidential election, international hackers slipped into the computer systems of at least four Florida school district networks in the hopes of stealing the personal data of hundreds of thousands of students. Yair Levy, Ph.D., Information System and Cybersecurity professor from NSU’s College of Engineering and Computing, said, “Students’ Social Security numbers are particularly valuable.” According to Dr. Levy, almost all high school kids have a clean slate when it comes to credit scoring, so the hackers are looking for ways to have access to a large volume of teenagers’ information and wait until they can monetize that data.
