George Hanbury: Nova Southeastern University hosts the only debate in Florida’s U.S. Senate race
FORT LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, FL – The stakes are very high in this important election year as voters continue to confront the difficulties and challenges of the worst economy since the Great Depression. Candidates who win victory on Nov. 6 — from the White House to the State House and at thousands of city and county halls — will be the elected leadership to take us into an uncertain future.
In Florida, the highest profile race is the contest for the U.S. Senate, where incumbent Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., faces opposition from Congressman Connie Mack, R-Fla.
The only confirmed debate for this statewide race will be broadcast live from the main campus of Nova Southeastern University. The debate, titled ”
Decision 2012: Before You Vote,” will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
The debate is being produced under the leadership of WPTV News Channel 5 for distribution in high definition and will be moderated by Michael Williams, anchor for WPTV News Channel 5 in West Palm Beach. The panel of journalists who will question the candidates includes Anthony Man, political writer for the South Florida Sun-Sentinel; Lissette Campos, director of community affairs for ABC Action News/WFTS in Tampa; and Toluse Olorunnipa, state/politics reporter with The Miami Herald.
Immediately after the debate, Nova is partnering in hosting a live statewide webcast for instant analysis and perspective, moderated by Kevin Corke, former White House correspondent for NBC News. The analysis will include interviews with journalists, NSU students, faculty and representatives of the candidates.
NSU is very proud to host this important forum that will provide millions of Floridians with an opportunity to get to know the candidates and their views on the critical issues that affect the future of our state and country. We embrace a mission that extends to performing an important convening role on vital issues by promoting healthy dialogue about such issues. We have demonstrated this mission by similarly hosting debates in 2006 and 2010, for governor and U.S. Senate respectively. Our students learn from this process – but so will millions of Floridians

“Decision 2012: Before You Vote” is a project created and produced by the partnership of Leadership Florida and the Florida Press Association. The senate debate sponsors and partners also include Florida Blue, Florida Credit Unions, AARP and the Claude Pepper Foundation.
