FREE Summer of Fun Kicks Off With “Make a Splash” Party at NSU’s Library: June 13
Experience 8 weeks of FREE exciting activities for children, families, tweens, teens and adults at Nova Southeastern University’s Alvin Sherman Library!
FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. – Have a blast this summer without spending a dime by making the Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) your one-stop shop for fun activities for all ages.
For the ninth year in a row, FREE programming for youth, teens and adults will begin on June 13 and last through Aug. 7 at the Alvin Sherman Library, 3100 Ray Ferrero, Jr. Blvd. in Davie.
The festivities start with the FREE Summer Reading “Make a Splash” Kick-off Party on Sunday, June 13 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the only library open on Sundays in Broward County. At the beach-themed party, participants can sign up to win prizes for reading all summer long. The party, hosted with South Florida Parenting, will also feature a DJ, a magician, games, crafts, door prizes and more.
The party is also a great time to learn about the many other FREE summer activities available. Check out the Special Super Saturday family-oriented activities:
- Sat. June 19 – Salty Sue the Pirate: Suzy Hammer, children’s entertainer extraordinaire, delights audiences with silly songs and stories. All ages with caregiver, 2 to 3 p.m.
- Sat. June 26 – Fantasy Factory Theatre: This performance is a mixture of fun, comedy, and stories. It takes a pinch of Dr. Seuss, a dash of Karaoke, throws in a story called “The Stinky Cheese Man” and cooks up a fabulous show. All ages with caregiver, 2 to 3 p.m.
- Sat. July 3 – Family Fun & Games: Join us for board games, puzzles and more at this fun family program. All ages with caregiver, 2 to 3 p.m.
- Sat. July 10 – Geddy the Gecko: Reading is an adventure with this terrifically entertaining character actor. All ages with caregiver, 2 to 3 p.m.
- Sat. July 17 – Duck in Truck Puppets: Guaranteed to quack you up! All ages with caregiver, 2 to 3 p.m.
- Sat. July 24 – Jiggleman: Don’t miss this comedic actor and balancing act. He’s performed on The Late Show with David Letterman seven times. All ages with caregiver, 2 to 3 p.m.
- Sat. July 31 – Bobby the Balloon Guy’s Zany Balloon Show: Laugh at the hilarious antics of Bobby the Balloon Guy. All ages with caregiver, 2 to 3 p.m.
- Sat. Aug. 7 – Mr. Brian and the Boppets: Sing and dance at Mr. Brian’s rock and roll puppet concert. All ages with caregiver, 2 to 3 p.m.
Ongoing activities throughout the summer also include:
- Totally Tweens Every Tuesday: Read and get creative with activities, crafts and games just for tweens. Ages 9-12, from 2 to 3 p.m.
- Lunch Bunch Every Wednesday: Bring and eat your lunch while listening to stories and music, creating crafts, playing games and more. Special sessions include: June 23 with Storyteller Margaret Pashkin and July 14 with Captain Brian, a Professional Fisherman. Ages 7 and older, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
- Silly Stories with The Shermanettes Every Thursday: Be creative with the Shermanettes, winners of the South Florida Parenting Kids Crown Award. Explore art, music, literature and puppetry with silly stories and songs. Special sessions include: June 24 with recording artist Matthew Sabatella. All ages with caregiver, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
- Monthly Beach Blanket Movie Sundays: Bring a blanket or beach chair to the art gallery and enjoy favorite family films on a big screen one Sunday each month: June 27, July 18, and Aug. 1. Call 954-262-5477 for movie titles. Shows are from 2 to 3:30 p.m. All ages with caregiver.
- Creativity Corner Every Day: Drop in to color, create and decorate the library. All ages with caregiver.
While at the library, don’t forget to avoid rental fees by stocking up on free checkouts of the latest Blu-Rays, DVDs and video games. Teens can also earn service hours by volunteering over the summer.
