Free Healthcare for Baby Boomers
FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla.—While Washington is debating healthcare legislation, Nova Southeastern University (NSU) is taking action to provide free healthcare for baby boomers and older adults.
On Sunday, March 7, NSU will be providing baby boomers and older adults, ages 40 and up, with a wide array of health screenings. They include bone density, balance and fall risk, blood pressure, body mass index, foot health, glucose (blood sugar level), mental health, memory function, skin health and vascular blood flow (peripheral artery disease).
Called the 5th annual Boomers and Beyond 2010 Health and Wellness Expo, the event will be held at NSU’s Health Professions Division, located at 3200 University Drive. It will run between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
This year’s theme is “Your healthy future starts today!” The event will also provide “Information Desks”, where the public can gather information and speak to NSU faculty experts about diabetes, fall prevention, nutrition and aging, women’s health issues and medication. Information will also be available for elder law, audiology, dental health, geriatric medicine, breast and testicular self-exam information, optometry and speech and language.
Many community agencies will also be on hand to share information on health and aging wellness. Some of them, such as the AARP/Walgreens Wellness Tour, will provide screenings and health information.
There will be giveaways, raffle prizes, music, and snacks. WPBT2 Public Television will provide ongoing group and one-on-one tutorial sessions on utilizing the Internet, e-mail, and social networking sites like Facebook.
Boomers and Beyond will feature several speakers such as U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Ken Johnson, D.O., who is the vice chair of NSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Johnson will provide an update on women’s health issues and screenings.
NSU is presenting this event. The sponsors include Blue Cross Blue Shield Florida, WPBT Channel 2, Walgreens, Kiss Country Radio, and Broward Health
