Free Health Screenings at Nova Southeastern University for Baby Boomers and Seniors

FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE Fla. —- South Florida baby boomers and the elderly will have access to free health screenings at a Nova Southeastern University health fair on Sunday, April 3 2011.

The 6th annual Boomers & Beyond, A Day For Health And Wellness will provide free health screenings for:

  • peripheral artery disease
  • BMI
  • glucose
  • blood pressure
  • bone density
  • cholesterol
  • fall risk
  • foot health
  • memory
  • medication
  • mental health
  • skin health
  • social well-being.

Targeting adults ages 40 and up, the health screenings will be held at NSU’s Health Professions Division located at 3200 S. University Drive. It will run Sunday April 3, 20011 between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. The theme of this year’s Boomers & Beyond is “A Healthier YOU Starts Today!”

There will also be wellness information and health education desks (including diabetes, eye health, nutrition, and medication management), and many other opportunities to learn about prevention and disease management. NSU faculty experts will provide information on how to live healthier lives and engage in wellness activities.

The Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders Program (SHINE) will be there to educate people about health insurance matters. The Broward Sheriff Office’s Operation Medicine Cabinet will be on hand to allow people to turn in old medications for safe disposal; those who bring in medications for disposal will be entered in a drawing for a gift card. The Center for Hearing and Communication will provide free amplified telephones for those who qualify.

There will elder law attorneys on hand to provide information on issues such as advanced directives and other important issues.

This year’s event will feature performances by The Broward College Jazz Combo and Brazilian Voices, a female vocal group.  Popular radio station Magic 102.7 FM (The Greatest Hits of the 60s and 70s) will also be onsite, so come meet a DJ and play the Beatles Rock Band game.  The American Parkinson’s Disease Association Southeast Florida Chapter will feature an art show entitled Parkinson’s Disease: A Journey in Creativity to celebrate April as Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month.
