Florida’s merit-pay plan for teachers (Miami Herald and Sun-Sentinel)

The state merit pay bill would remove tenure for new teachers and extra pay for advanced degrees, among other provisions. Teacher pay would be based largely on how well students perform on tests.

Right now, Nova Southeastern University has about 17,000 students in its Fischler School of Education and Human Services, one of the largest programs in the country. About 80 percent are pursuing advanced degrees, and most graduates stay in Florida, said Wayne Driscoll, dean of faculty for the college. But that could change if the merit pay bill becomes law, he said. (Sun-Sentinel)

Wayne Driscoll, the dean of the faculty at Nova Southeastern University’s Fischler School of Education and Human Services, worries the bill might discourage teachers from pursuing advanced degrees. That, he said, could have an adverse effect on teacher quality in Florida. (Miami Herald)
